Sunday Salon: Sickness and Surprises

The Sunday Salon.com
Between being under the weather for most of this week and trying to catch up on all the things that didn't get done while I was feeling poorly, I haven't had much time for reading this week. (Usually I read voraciously when I'm sick, but since I had a migraine as well, reading was out.) I hope that the new week will offer more opportunities for reading. I'm looking forward to curling up with First Daughter and The Joy of Spooking after dinner.

There were some nice surprises for me this week. I was one of the winners for Bookshipper's Hachette Book Giveaway, so I have 14 brand new books coming my way from the publisher. (I didn't shriek excitedly and scare several cats when I found this out. No, that was clearly another bookish person named Ruth...) I won a copy of The Dangerous Joy of Dr. Sex and Other True Stories from Kelly at The Optimistic Book Fool. From her review, it sounds like a great read. I also won a copy of Surviving Ben's Suicide by C. Comfort Shields, which I'm really eager to read after reading her review and interview with the author.

My blog has undergone a redesign this week. Please take a look and let me know what you think!

I'm running two contests this week, one for Kaimira: The Sky Village and one for The Gargoyle. There's still plenty of time to enter both if you haven't already.

The Week in Reviews:
The Ruby in the Smoke by Phillip Pullman
Aberrations by Penelope Przekop

Happy reading, everyone!

  1. Hey Ruth, hope next week is better for you and you're feeling back to normal. I can't read with a migraine either. They are awful. Congrats on the book win by the way and I look forward to your review of First Daughter-I'm anxious to read that one.

  2. Migraines and reading do not mix well, I know! Ouch! I am glad you are feeling better. Congratulations on winning the Summer Reads Giveaway! I love the new look! I should be posting my review of Aberrations this week. Maybe tomorrow if I get around to polishing it off tonight.

I hope you have a great week!

  3. Ruth, you are going to read the rest of the Sally Lockhart series, arn't you? The third one, 'The Tiger in the Well' is definitely one of the best YA novels out there.

  6. Your new site looks great! It's sort of inspiring me to do the same, but I don't think I've blogged long enough or am savvy enough to do it yet! Hope you stay on the road to recovery. It's really rotten to feel so poorly that you can't read. I was sick a couple of months ago, and I swear all I did was stare at my toes. (The hydrocodone cough syrup might have had something to do with that though....)

  7. Congrats on winning the Hachette contest! I would definitely have shrieked too, LOL. I've tried for a few of those but haven't won yet. I hope the books are good! Feel better and I hope you can read more next week!

  8. Dar: Thank you! I was able to read about 50 pages in First Daughter last night, so I think I'm getting back to normal. (Well, as close as I come to "normal", anyway.)

Literary Feline: Thanks so much! I can't wait to read your review of Aberrations. I was avoiding reviews of it until I wrote my own, so now I need to go back and hunt for them.

Table Talk: Thanks for stopping in! I'll definitely be reading the rest of the Sally Lockhart series. I'll be sure to post my reviews of the next two, as well as The Tin Princess, which sounds like it's a bit of a spin-off for the series. I was very impressed by Pullman's style.

John: Yikes, flashing lights? That would be quite scary. Thanks for visiting my blog!

SheIsTooFondofBooks: Thanks! I was thrilled when I saw that. Aside from awards I've gotten for my photography, it's the biggest contest I've ever won.

Bookfool: I have a bad back, and occasionally have to take Tylenol with codeine for it. The weirdest things fascinate me when I'm taking it. Next time I'll have to see if my toes seem more interesting than usual! ;)

Meghan: Thank you! Good luck with the rest of the Hachette giveaways. I believe Book Room Reviews has one that's still going on.
